Badlands Residency Day 39

Another day of not getting to head south to Stronghold and Palmer.  It started snowing on and off around mid morning.  Everything is so wet and mucky from the snows and rains that hiking is pretty much out of the question.  Sage Creek Road (in the park) was closed down today, probably won't re-open until sometime thursday.  It is wet enough that any driving on it will destroy the road surface and require repairs.  3-5 inches of snow expected tonight, another 3-7 tomorrow, and more tomorrow night.  Ugh.

I worked more on my art in the parks project, and now have a very rough draft ready to begin cleaning up.  Still a lot of work to do on it, but it's a reasonable start.  I also spent a couple hours reading, mostly from a book on the history of Cuny Table, which is a large sod table running along the southern border of the Stronghold Unit.

That's about it, aside from some laundry and packing for NYC.

Badlands Residency Day 38

As the one day of the week with some sun in the forecast, I got up early for sunrise photos up here in the north unit.  I really want some sunrise and sunset shots of the area between Conata and Pinnacles. Sadly the light did not cooperate.  It was reasonably clear before sunrise, then the clouds began to move in.

Worked on the same painting of Palmer Creek a bunch today.  It's sure going slowly, but I might finally be getting it to a point that I almost like.  Still a lot of work left to do on it.

Cooked some shepherd's pie for dinner, and made way too much.  I'm going to have to share it with friends - I leave for NYC in just a couple days!

This small area of the park is the only location where
you can see all the existing rock layers in one place.
Pierre Shale, Chadron, Brule, Rockyford Ash*, Sharps.
(*the exact categorizing of this layer is in question)

Same area with all formations present.

of the Chadron Formation.
Extremely crumbly when dry,
exceedingly slick when wet.
