Each visit comes with a new teaching endeavor, and this time she will be working with high school students as part of a youth camp experience. The students come from diverse experiences: a handful from Red Cloud Indian School in Pine Ridge and about a dozen who are visiting from the Calhoun School in Manhattan's Upper West Side. Badlands has a rich and unique history, and has started down the path of creating the country's first Tribal National Park which will separate off the park's lands that are within the borders of Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (read details). Jessica has spent significant time accessing these remote and seldom visited lands, creating numerous paintings and beginning the process of a research publication on the history and current state of this area. Once this project is finished, Jessica will continue on to other National Parks, exploring and gaining intimate knowledge of these intriguing landscapes.

A large portion of the park is located on the reservation and is co-managed by the Oglala Lakota Tribe and the National Park Service. Future plans for this land include creating the first Tribal National Park. Badlands will be reaching out to Lakota youth to fill summer internship positions to begin to build the groundwork for a successful Tribal National Park. Jessica will again record her experiences on her blog at JessicaLBryant.blogspot.com.

This is similar in style to the junior ranger program that is so successful in our national parks. The booklet is available to download for free at the Junior Friends of Tubbs Hill site. When funding is available, printed copies will be located at the city parks department as well as the visitor's center. If you would like to help fund printing costs, contact the Friends of Tubbs Hill organization at the same website.

May 20, 2011

Last week, the 2nd and 3rd grade classes at Sorensen Magnet School of the Arts and Humanities spent a full day on Tubbs Hill. They rotated between four stations, learning about native plants, native animals, conservation, and nature drawing. The next day, Jessica (who also taught the drawing segment) came into the school and began an artist in residence project. She worked with twelve 2nd and 3rd graders, three from each class, to paint landscapes of Tubbs Hill. The kids worked from Jessica's photography of three different views from Tubbs. They worked together in groups of four, all painting the same view. Jessica focused on teaching value and color, helping the students learn to really see what they were looking at. The finished paintings were used to generate a compilation poster showing all twelve pieces. The paintings are arranged by class; the top two rows are the 2nd grade classes, the bottom two rows are the 3rd grade classes. They had just two hours of painting time together, spread out over two days. The kids showed remarkable focus and dedication to their artwork, and the results are spectacular! As part of her residency, Jessica also taught painting to the kindergarten and 1st grade classes in a more relaxed environment. Posters are for sale through Sorensen for just $15 each. Solo show, titled "East to West," opens at Ink to Media. North 523 Pines Road, Spokane Valley, Washington. Reception is from 4-8pm, live music and hors d'oeuvres. About the show:

I enjoy traveling and exploring whenever I get the chance; when a place strikes me, I am often compelled to paint it and get to know it better. A few favorite places have moved me to return for multiple visits. What you see here represents a small portion of my North American travels and experiences, presented geographically from East to West.

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
